Janet Huggins awarded Hebden Cup

Janet Huggins became the sixteenth recipient of Salle Joseph’s Hebden Cup at an award ceremony held late in the evening of Friday 8th July at a Croydon hotel.

The Cup which seeks to recognise “services to fencing” was presented to her by the Salle’s president, Joe Gibbons, for her outstanding contribution to the sport both as a coach and as an armourer of some repute.

The presentation took place at the completion of the evening’s weapons check in for the prestigious World Modern Pentathlon event due to take place at Crystal Palace over the following days and was appropriately witnessed by her equally-hard working fellow armourers and a host of international pentathletes gathered together in pre-competition spirits.

With the London Olympics now scarcely a year away, the organisation of this event was under intense scrutiny to determine whether we can meet the required standards of management and security.

The role of the armourer is a key factor in the running of a major competition and it was satisfying to note that the attendant officials and competitors were all highly appreciative of the efforts of Janet and her fellow armourers.

Croydon Playing Fields Association’s 40th agm

At Croydon Playing Fields Association’s 40th agm held on Wednesday 8th April some of the Salle’s members put on a display of swordfencing for the Chairman, Edward Handley, the members and the principal guest of honour, His Worship the Mayor, Cllr Robert Askey. In attendance also was the MP for Croydon Central, Andrew Pelling.

Employing both Foil and Sabre, Sammy, Christian and James gave a superb demonstration of close order fighting in the upper hallway off the Mayor’s Parlour and received the plaudits of the CPFA attendees.

The fencing display was re-arranged for a latter time than planned and it was most unfortunate that Sarah and Mervyn had to leave at 9pm for another engagement though she participated in the preparations beforehand.

The photographs below were taken by Kevin Ireland.

Well done everyone.
